Summary
In this chapter, the author describes a typical Samoan household. The author describes the roles of different people in the household. At the head of each household is the matai. This is a position of power within every household. They communicate on behalf of the household with the village chiefs.
The chapter also describes how a girl becomes a taupo - a ceremonial princess that is chosen by the high chiefs. The taupo holds certain privileges like being exempt from certain household duties.
Discussion
It was interesting to know how people are appointed to the position of power and what roles they play in the society. It was also fascinating to know how Taupo has certain privileges and how she can visit various households and decide for herself which one is the best fit for her.
